چکیده

Abstract The number and coverage of weather observations over the oceans were considerably reduced during World War II (WW2) due to disruptions normal trade routes. that do exist for this period are often unavailable science as they still only available paper records or scanned images. We have rescued detailed hourly contained in more than 28,000 logbook images US Navy Pacific Fleet stationed at Hawai'i 1941–1945 produce a dataset 630,000 records. Each record contains date time, positional information several meteorological measurements, totalling 3 million individual observations. data rescue process consisted citizen project asking volunteers transcribe from images, followed by additional quality control processes. This not air temperature, sea surface atmospheric pressure, wind speed direction, mainly Ocean but also includes some Atlantic Indian Oceans. new found be good inter‐comparing independent measurements taken on ships travelling convoy comparing with 20th‐Century Reanalysis. provides invaluable instrumental times places WW2, which fill gaps existing reconstructions.

Multiple-Objective Optimization in Naval Ship Design

This paper presents an optimization methodology that includes three important components necessary for a systematic approach to naval ship concept design. These are: • An efficient and effective search of design space for non-dominated designs • Well-defined and quantitative measures of objective attributes • An effective format to describe the design space and to present non-dominated concepts...

Naval Surface Ship In-Service Information Exploitation

The Royal Navy operates a fleet of complex modern warships and submarines each comprising a system of systems often in harsh and potentially volatile environments. The maintenance of surface vessels is primarily undertaken by Babcock and BAe Systems in an alliance with the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry of Defence system engineering lifecycle is known as CADMID, this details the six phases o...

Reengineering the Naval Ship Concept Design Process

Naval ship concept design is very much an “ad hoc” process. Selection of design concepts for assessment is guided primarily by experience, design lanes, rules-of-thumb, preference and imagination. Objective attributes are not adequately synthesized or presented to support efficient and effective decisions. Attributes are often qualitative, inconsistent, and not provided to design engineers in a...

Measuring Cognitive Task Load on a Naval Ship: Implications of a Real World Environment

Application of more and more automation in process control shifts the operator’s task from manual to supervisory control. Increasing system autonomy, complexity and information fluctuations make it extremely difficult to develop static support concepts that cover all critical situations after implementing the system. Therefore, support systems in dynamic domains should be dynamic as the domain ...

Observations of Tropical Stratospheric Winds before World War II

This paper discusses observations of the winds in the tropical stratosphere taken before the advent of regular operational balloon soundings in this region. These observations are at least broadly consistent with modern measurements, in the sense that they show that the winds in the tropical stratosphere have been undergoing some strong interannual variations over the last century. However, the...
